Tom Hicks joined the 2mtrust team in 2019 as a holistic Financial Adviser. Not only has Tom built long-standing relationships with his lovely clients over the years, he has also earned his title as a Chartered Financial Planner.
He takes his work as seriously as his running – Tom has completed marathons, half-marathons and countless Parkruns (often whilst pushing one of his kids in a buggy!) Whether he’s home or on holiday, rain or shine, Tom will make time to run.
With a family of his own Tom is no stranger to juggling the work/life balance. And for this blog we’re focusing on life away from his laptop (or Strava!) We’ve asked him some questions so you can get to know him better – after all, there’s more to Tom than mortgages, money and marathons…
1. What did you do for a job before coming to work with 2mtrust?
I worked for three years in another financial advice practice as a Paraplanner – I was working alongside the Financial Advisers supporting them and their clients. This is where I started my career in financial services and then joined and trained as a Financial Adviser at 2mtrust. Before that I was a Primary School teacher and I spent two years teaching 6 and 7 year-olds in Northumberland

2. What do you like to do outside of work?
I’ve always been good at running (I completed my first Great North Run when I was 21 and enjoyed it) but I didn’t really get into it until 2021 when I bought a running buggy and someone introduced me to Strava. Ever since then I have run regularly and I joined a running club last year – it’s great having a running community to keep me accountable and encourage me. I ran my first marathon in Manchester this year and hope to do one a year moving forwards.
When I’m not working (or running) I love doing sociable things with other people – especially with my family. My wife and I have two young children and we treasure our time with them.
I also play boardgames on a weekend with my friends which is always a good laugh! My all-time favourite is Settlers of Catan.
3. What has been your favourite holiday so far?
Between the age of 5-10 we lived in India and our family holidays were often to places like Kerala - which I still have great childhood memories of. I also love camping with my wife and the kids – you don’t always have to go abroad to have a great time and make great memories.

4. Do you speak any other languages?
I was good at languages at school but don’t remember much now. I learned Hindi for a year in Primary School – I can only remember 1 sentence. Then I did German and French at high school. I continued with French at AS Level but I don’t use it anymore – I can probably get by in France if I want to order a croissant!
5. Do you have a favourite food?
Meal-wise I like anything spicy! If I had to choose one thing it would be Fajitas “done properly” – side-dishes and all
Snack-wise I’m known to eat a hot cross bun every single day for breakfast (yes, that’s 365 days of the year). Hot cross buns are not just for Easter in my opinion!
6. What is your favourite film, tv show or book and why?
The Matrix (just the first one) - mostly for the nostalgia and because it’s a great film!
Batman Begins - I like superheroes and the comic book genre but I’m not a hard-core comic fan and – for me this film is just the right balance.
7. What is your favourite season and why?
I like all seasons for different reasons - if I had to pick one I’d say spring.
When I think of spring I think of going for a run - where there’s a crisp clear sky, the flowers are just starting to come through and it’s not too hot – perfect weather for running

8. What is your favourite colour?
As an Arsenal fan I would have to say red
9. What advice would you give your teenage self?
Be curious – don’t be afraid to ask questions about things and people
And make your own mind up – don’t let anyone “should” all-over you
10. What is (or what would be) your karaoke song?
I’ve been likened to James Blunt before so I’d probably do “You’re Beautiful”
Or another option might be “Wonderwall” by Oasis

So, did you learn something new about Tom Hicks?
With a young family and house of his own, Tom doesn’t just advise on financial planning, he lives it. Whether it’s mortgages, protection, pensions or investments, Tom is an excellent Chartered Financial Planner – helping his clients to live well in the present, achieve their financial goals and plan for their financial future.
After all, life is a marathon, not a sprint!
“Tom is a Chartered Financial Planner with a full case load giving advice to his clients and a constant source of advice and help to his adviser colleagues” – Mark Townson, Practice Principal
